Went to Durant over the weekend. I tried playing stickball for the first time with relatives. I'm terrible at it 😆 but I'd totally try it again.
Went to the Choctaw powwow, bought too many things.
Walked around an old unmaintained cemetery where some family is buried, but most the headstones had broken apart and returned to the landscape.

Wings are homemade. The rest is store bought. I *almost* got the wings working with an actuator to raise and lower them, but didn't quite measure things right and ran out of time. Ah well, maybe Ada will want to be a different winged creature next year.

@bon.bon.fin.fin and I helped build a "Five Nights at Freddy's" themed haunted house over the last week or so. I'm actually not a big horror movie person, so PG13 haunted house is about my speed. Here's some of the props. We had a bunch of giant foam pizza slices and stuff too but I didn't get pics of everything.

I'm not doing this for indigenous peoples day specifically, but makes sense to post about it today.

I was having a chat with a cousin and I learned that a great aunt had talked about eating "mud potatoes"

Cool! What's a mud potato...

Well, I have this book that lists common plant names along with their Choctaw names.

Mud Potato - Lukchuk Ahe, American Groundnut.
They have a pretty broad growing range, and it looks like I can grow them here successfully if I'm attentive about it.

So I found some online, planted a bunch, and this one is currently boiling on my stove to taste.

The guy who wrote that book, was also my teacher at a little pottery class I took the other year. He had commented about "knowledge that's sleeping".
I liked that.

I'm sure there's a ton of people out there that know what a mud potato is, and this is just news to me. But I like the idea that these chunks of our histories aren't lost. They're just taking a nap rn, waiting for someone to have a chat with their cousin or grandma.

So here's to waking sleeping knowledge.

Ty for the massive amount of help @bon.bon.fin.fin (3d modeling and animating the art) Nutmeg, Dan Ward (web project) Andrew Lindeman (black badge madness) Kyle Kelley, Anch, and Trash Robot. Zebbler did a bunch of the 3d art for the led wall. If I missed someone pls tell me. It's been a whirlwind and I'm not firing on all cylinders rn.

You'll have to watch my badge talk when it goes up on YouTube for more info, but briefly: The badges are Penrose tiles. They fit together to form mosaics in physical and virtual space. Attendees each had a UUID, which allowed them to place their tile in a massive collective mosaic.
Nutmeg, Polr and Anch did a ton of work to get it going on spux.art

They also each have a chamber that can hold what defcon attendees lovingly refer to as a "Shitty Add On".
The idea was to showcase projects by attendees and make customization the focus of the badge. We released the specs of the chamber well ahead of time, so people would have a chance to design for it. What people came up with did not disappoint. There were a ton of amazing pcb projects, but also some really awesome low tech customization. It was an accessible way for everyone to customize their badges.

The badges were a blast to make but there were so many problems with the manufacturer. We still got most of them, and the backups still held the SAOs. We're making sure everyone that didn't get a "real badge" can trade in next year.

I had a couple winners of the badge/lanyard puzzle. I also did the cipher portion of the White House challenge (!!!)

I got to create a sculpture, based on a child's dr

I got to create a sculpture, based on a child's drawing, for the Saint Jude's Children's hospital gala at @denverartmuseum last night. I didn't get great closeup pics of it, but the texture on it turned out pretty neat and sorta fuzzy, and it really is that neon IRL. Foam and silicone mostly.
I don't go to galas often (ever), and don't own cocktail attire, but I commissioned a skirt and felt pretty fancy in it. Took the whole flower arrangement home with me too ✨

Made a dish that's kinda like a mix of jambalaya,

Made a dish that's kinda like a mix of jambalaya, kinda like Choctaw holhponi. It turned out so good you guys!

Cajun spiced golden hominy, toasted hickory nuts, red beans, squash, currant vinegar, and pan seared rainbow trout. Topped with filé and crunchy chile oil.

The more I learn about Choctaw foods, the more I'm annoyed that the indigenous influence on Cajun cuisine is represented as such a footnote.

I can't recall if I rambled about filé yet on here, but it's just my favorite thing. For the local pals who haven't had it, it's ground sassafras leaves. Can be used as a thickener, and commonly added right at the end of some dishes. It has a neat history. The Choctaws traded it to the French, and that's why it's part of Cajun cooking in the first place. Sassafras itself has history, (and controversy) and there's a really great song by blackforager about it.

In Choctaw, the sassafras tree is called iti kvffi, but filé is called Kombo Hakshish (Kombo, like "Comb-boh"). Kinda sounds like Gumbo huh?

There's some disagreement about the origin of the word gumbo. Some people say it's kombo, and some people say the origin is ngumbo, the West African word for okra. Certainly that's an important influence in Cajun cooking as well.

But filé is regional, and people tend to only use filé or okra in gumbo, not both. I tend to eat my gumbo with filé, so I'm going with Kombo.

Anyway, idk what to call this dish but it's champuli (tasty).

Tooth fairy came last night. Ada pretty much knows it's me, but we're both pretending at this point because they know I'm going to make tiny fairy objects for them. So Ada wrote the tooth fairy a note asking for a fairy sized wand and fairy dust.

I made bvnaha (shuckbread).
It's typically made with just cornmeal today, like a little meatless tamale, but I tried it with some (mostly) traditional additions. Added roasted and ground pecans, walnuts and sunflower seeds (in place of hickory nuts), honey, filé, and a little bit of hetok (pea pod or hickory ash).
They're pretty tasty. I made a million of them.
*PS my fireplace is clean and I don't burn anything that doesn't belong in food

I took a trip out to Antlers Oklahoma, to take a traditional Choctaw pottery class (and to see my awesome cousin).
I made a bowl with clay dug from the ancestral homeland in Mississippi!
Pulled out all the little rocks and sticks, tempered it with mussel shell, and formed it in to this little shape. This was just the coolest experience and I feel really lucky to be able to come here to learn this.
If all goes as planned, I'll be back in a couple weeks to fire it! 🔥 ❤️

Super secret project I posted about. I got to do the art for Joe Grand's (killer as usual) project - "World's Thinnest Boombox" for TDK electronics. It uses their new PiezoListen speaker.
The boombox premiered at @hackaday Supercon this last weekend. His keynote talk about it is up on YouTube for the curious, with a demo of it playing everyone's favorite hacker anthem.
Nov 15th there will be a video release. I can't spoil it but it'll be worth checking out!

We made it! Yesterday we got to see the new Chocta

We made it! Yesterday we got to see the new Choctaw cultural center. Really impressed with this place. Great exhibits, artist gallery, and the cafe had food I've been trying to cook but didn't have the flavor reference. So I tried everything. Banaha bread, grape dumplings and tanchi lebona (hominy pork stew). Dad tasted the stew and said "hey! That's what my grandmother made" yay legit! Now I know what I'm aiming for.

I usually keep my IG limited to art posts, but it's been sparse lately and there's some ways in which I consider cooking / foraging / gardening part of my art practice. So, in letting my art shift in whatever ways it's going to, I'd like to share something I made from *mostly* indigenous ingredients (and some odds and ends from my yard)
These are bison, serviceberry, duck fat, wild rice, roasted green chile, lions mane mushroom, sage, dandelion, queen Anne's lace and maple sausages for my sister's bday.
Had some for lunch in burger form with service berry aioli and yum. It's kinda like boudin but way more delicate.

How about a gold flake glow in the dark fairy dust resin ring, complete with their actual baby tooth inside? *Fingers crossed it fits* The tooth fairy is much more familiar with tooth sizes than they are with finger sizes.

I designed it for an activity @ Untitled at the Denver Art Museum.
It was more popular than I thought it would be, and was a bit chaotic helping tables of people make theirs during the event. But at the end of the evening it was worth it. It hadn't dawned on me that people would want to wear them. End of the night, looking around the museum, I saw sooo many little glowing boutonnieres bobbing around. Kinda magic! Kinda burned in as a core memory.

Spring is coming... For my Patreon this month I ma

Spring is coming...
For my Patreon this month I made these little Colorado wildflower seed packets. It's becoming my new favorite tradition. The little illustration is of ...not quite a wildflower, but it _is_ a flowering shrub/tree that grows all over north America. It's a Saskatoon. The name is derived from the Cree name for the berry mis-sask-quah-toomina. It's also called a service berry among other things. The serviceberry name has a wonderfully morbid history that pleases the lil goth in me. The blooms would indicate that the ground had thawed enough to hold services for the people who'd passed over the winter.
So, that was a little side story in telling you why I made these. This packet to me is about sharing some earthy gardening sort of healing. Stepping in to spring, sticking fingers in dirt, respect for indigenous land and foods, and to honor friends that have left us.
All that said, the seed packs are full of a variety of wildflowers because I didn't want to commit folks to growing something so specific that might be difficult. That's not the point of it.

If you'd like one of these seed packets, message me. I made ~60 for patrons and have lots extra. You don't have to be a patron to get one. I'd like them to get to people that want one.

I'm turning 40 this week! It isn't as heavy as I'd imagined it to be. It feels more like shedding weight, like coming home. I know exactly what I want and need to be doing, and with that, my birthday ask is support on this path to reach a nearby but long term goal post.
With a bit more patreon support I can carve out time to build more income sources that align with my goals. I'm very much on the cusp of dedicating the time I need to do this art life more smoothly, with less financial disruption. I'd like to lay down the stress of the hustle just a *little* bit and really focus on making my best art in the coming years.

Late night laser etching and dying leather for a journal. I'm finding leather dye pretty tough to work with, so I cheated and touched it up with gouache. Hopefully it holds up. Next I need to finish the edges and put the binder bits in. #WIP
